Yule is a winter festival identified with Christmas. The pagan Germanic peoples
celebrated Yule from late December to early January on a date determined by the lunar
Germanic calendar. When the Julian calendar was adopted Yule was placed on December
the 25th to correspond with Christmas.
The word "Yule" comes from the same root as the word "jolly." Yule traditions include
decorating a fir or spruce tree, burning a Yule log, hanging mistletoe and holly branches,
giving gifts, caroling, being with loved ones and general celebration and merriment.
